Chester has arguably the most architecturally distinctive commercial streetscape in England, built around the unique two-tier Rows — covered galleried walkways running above street-level shops along Eastgate Street, Northgate Street, Bridge Street, and Watergate Street. This unusual medieval and Tudor building form, combined with the city's Roman origins and its almost completely intact circuit of city walls, makes Chester one of the most heavily conservation-controlled retail environments we work in. Any shopfront alteration within The Rows or the surrounding historic core needs to respect not only the individual building but the wider architectural rhythm of the galleried walkway itself.

Cheshire West and Chester Council applies extremely strict planning and listed building controls throughout the city centre, and the great majority of premises within The Rows and around The Cross — the historic crossing point of the four main Roman streets — are listed, many at a high grade reflecting their exceptional architectural and historic significance. Shopfront replacement here is a specialist heritage undertaking, and we prepare detailed listed building consent applications with full heritage justification, working closely with the council's conservation officers from initial pre-application discussion through to approval. Materials are almost always traditional painted timber or the highest-quality timber-effect aluminium, matched carefully to the black-and-white timber-framed character that defines much of the city centre.

Eastgate Street and the area around the famous Eastgate Clock have a particular concentration of high-profile retail premises where any shopfront work is subject to intense scrutiny, both from the council and from the volume of tourists who visit the city specifically to see its historic architecture. Northgate Street has a similar character, with a mix of galleried Rows properties and ground-level shops requiring the same careful heritage treatment.

Away from the immediate historic core, Handbridge and Boughton have their own more modest Victorian retail parades where planning requirements ease considerably, and we install a broader range of contemporary and heritage-style aluminium shopfronts here depending on the specific building. Hoole has developed a lively independent retail and hospitality scene along its high street, again with more scope for modern shopfront design than the city centre proper.

Saltney and Blacon, on the western and northern edges of the city, have conventional neighbourhood high streets where standard aluminium shopfronts, roller shutters, and automatic doors serve independent retailers and convenience businesses without the heritage complexity of the historic centre.
