Norwich has one of the best-preserved medieval street patterns of any English city, and this is immediately apparent in the layout of its historic commercial core. The Norwich Lanes — a network of narrow medieval streets threading between the market place and the cathedral — form the city's most characterful independent retail quarter, home to a dense concentration of small independent shops, cafés, and specialist retailers occupying buildings with origins going back centuries. Shopfront work in the Lanes is inherently a heritage exercise, and Norwich City Council's conservation officers pay close attention to how new shopfronts respect the scale, materials, and historic character of these narrow streets.

The great majority of the city centre falls within the Norwich city centre conservation area, one of the largest in England, and a significant number of buildings are listed, particularly around London Street, Magdalen Street, and the historic market place. We prepare detailed heritage-appropriate shopfront designs for these areas — typically painted timber or timber-effect aluminium framing with traditional proportions — and handle the full planning and, where necessary, listed building consent process with Norwich City Council. London Street in particular, one of the first pedestrianised shopping streets in the country, retains a strong Victorian and Edwardian shopfront character that we work hard to respect in any replacement scheme.

The Golden Triangle and Thorpe Hamlet have their own well-established independent retail parades serving these popular residential areas, with a good mix of cafés, delis, and specialist shops in Victorian terraced buildings, while Mile Cross and the outer residential districts have more conventional neighbourhood high streets where standard aluminium shopfronts, roller shutters, and automatic doors meet the everyday needs of local retailers and convenience businesses without the same conservation complexity.
