Portsmouth's commercial geography is defined by its naval and maritime heritage, and this shows up in the shopfront work we undertake across the city, from the modern retail development at Gunwharf Quays through to the traditional high street character of Commercial Road and Southsea. Gunwharf Quays, built on former Ministry of Defence land, is a purpose-built outlet and leisure destination where retail units follow a consistent contemporary design language, and we work within the estate's own design guidelines alongside standard planning requirements when installing or replacing shopfronts for tenants here.

Commercial Road remains the traditional retail spine of the city centre, home to a mix of national retailers and independent businesses in buildings that reflect Portsmouth's varied architectural history, including significant post-war reconstruction following bomb damage during the Second World War. This creates a retail environment with fewer conservation constraints than many historic cities, and Portsmouth City Council's planning process for shopfront alterations here is generally proportionate and straightforward, though we still assess each building carefully for any local listing or conservation area designation before finalising a design.

Southsea has a genuinely different character, with an independent retail and hospitality scene centred around Palmerston Road and Osborne Road, occupying attractive Victorian and Edwardian buildings close to the seafront. Given Southsea's coastal position, marine-grade specification is a standard consideration for shopfronts here, and we specify corrosion-resistant aluminium alloys and stainless steel fixings to cope with the salt-laden air coming off the Solent. Some parts of Southsea fall within conservation area designation, and we design shopfronts that respect the established Victorian character of these streets where required.

Fratton, North End, and Copnor serve their communities with busy neighbourhood high streets, where independent retailers and takeaways make up much of the local commercial offer, and we install standard aluminium shopfronts, roller shutters, and automatic doors across these areas regularly.
